About me

My background is as a dancer and choreographer (www.elisabettavittoni.it).

In 1987 I earned a master’s degree in performance at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. In 1990 I moved to New York, where I lived for three years.

During that time I developed a piece inspired by Italian architecture, and I started to include in my choreography projections of slides and films, creating a multimedia performance.

Since childhood I have been fascinated by how visiting an ancient villa or garden affects my emotions. This characterized my path in the years that followed. Each of my pieces starts from a vision of a site where I will subsequently locate the dance and culminates in a video and finally in a performance.

This relationship between location and piece led to a turning point in my life when, after my 30-year career as a choreographer, I decided to become an interior designer.

I have always been attracted by the past, antiques and things that have fallen into disuse. Over the years I have been collecting objects, costumes, hats, which have accompanied me on my many journeys and taken shape in the different houses and cities where I have lived.

Each object placed in the right spot has a story to tell, and every time you look at it, it narrates the tale.

Working in the theatre for so many years, I have always had a special interest in different textiles and furnishings. I designed most of the sets and costumes for my shows.

Lights are another magical element. Lighting creates and defines a setting; like an emotion, it can distort it or accompany it.

Two years ago I embarked on a project to renovate my family’s home in La Spezia, a little villa from the 1950s.

During the process of looking for materials and combining and blending together different items from different eras, I became fascinated by the world of interior design and decided to deepen my knowledge by taking a course – Master in Interior Design at the Accademia del Lusso in Rome.

Impulsively, just for fun I sent photos of my new home to a prestigious magazine, “Casa Deco”, and unexpectedly the editor, Letizia Tartaglini, wrote to tell me that my house was going to be featured in the January 2021 issue.

My idea of  “home”, is to create a space, a container of objects, memories, moods, where one can live, express oneself, relax, escape.
